Atopic dermatitis (environmental allergies)
Does your dog scratch, lick, and chew no matter what you try?
Atopic dermatitis — an allergy to everyday environmental triggers — is the most common reason a dog won’t stop scratching. It’s manageable, and testing can target the cause.
Signs you might notice
Constant itching
Scratching, licking, or chewing — especially the paws
Recurring ear infections
Ears that flare up again and again
Red, irritated skin
Inflamed skin and frequent face-rubbing
Seasonal flares
Itching that gets worse at certain times of year, at least early on
Infections that return
Skin infections that keep coming back after treatment
What's really going on
Atopic dermatitis is an allergic reaction to everyday environmental triggers — pollens, dust mites, and molds — much like hay fever in people, except it shows up in the skin.
It tends to worsen over time and rarely resolves on its own, so most pets need ongoing management rather than a one-time fix.
Allergy testing — intradermal skin testing or a blood test — identifies your pet’s specific triggers so treatment can target the cause.
How a specialist helps
A dermatologist confirms the diagnosis, rules out food allergy and parasites, and identifies your pet’s specific allergens through testing.
From those results they can formulate allergen-specific immunotherapy — allergy injections or under-the-tongue drops that gently retrain the immune system — alongside modern anti-itch therapy and care for secondary infections.
What to expect at your visit
- A dermatology exam and ruling out food allergy and parasites
- Allergy testing (intradermal and/or blood) to identify triggers
- A custom immunotherapy plan you give at home
- Anti-itch therapy and treatment of any secondary infections
